Em 1876, Fiódor Dostoievsky começa a publicação de uma folha mensal que pretendia que fosse "um diário íntimo, em toda a acepção da palavra, isto é, um fiel relato do que mais me interessou pessoalmente."
Ou seja, algo muito parecido com um blog.
Mas três meses depois ele escreve:
"Custa a crer, mas é verdade, ainda não encontrei a forma do Diário, e não sei se algum dia encontrarei... Assim, tenho 10 ou 15 assuntos (pelo menos) para tratar, quando me sento para escrever. Todavia, os meus assuntos preferidos, afasto-os involuntariamente. Ocupar-me-iam demasiado espaço, exigiriam demasiao ardor da minha parte... e, deste modo, não escrevo o que me agrada. Por outro lado, imaginei com demasiada ingenuidade que se trataria de um autêntico "Diário". Um verdadeiro "Diário" é impossível; só se pode fazer um diário artificialmente preparado para o público..."
Eu, ao escrever aqui, sinto muitas vezes essa mesma artificialidade... essa mesma impossibilidade de escrever tudo...
e espero, ingenuamente, que os silêncios possam dizer o que calo... mas isso, sei-o bem, é um desejo condenado ao fracasso.

Campus Communications & the Wisdom of Blogging

The advent of "blogging"—online journaling—has breathed new life into the Web. A contraction of the term "Web logging," blogging can best be described as a form of micropublishing. Featuring no or very low start-up costs, few basic infrastructure requirements, and ease-of-use, it has enabled users to publish their thoughts and ideas without barriers.
In a very short time, blogging has moved beyond a niche activity for the hyper-extroverted to becoming the backbone of a new Internet communications movement. Although often deeply individualized, Web logging has revitalized the idea of online communities: many blogs have moved from obscurity to having a large and devoted readership—many blogging sites enable people to link their blog to other blog clusters, based on topic and the interests of the authors.
Blogging has also transcended its first early use as a simple online diary. Enterprising alternative news outlets have expanded the concept by turning to Web logs to reach their audiences, easily bypassing mainstream corporate media. Family members use the software to keep in touch with each other. Musicians chronicle their tours for fans and press. Software developers document the development process of popular applications and solicit feedback from their user base.
Blogs in Academe
What, then, is the potential for blogs in higher education? Certainly, offering students space for creating personal content and commentary is the primary application. But the number of uses for blogs are limitless. As a tool for extending learning and encouraging communication and community, blogs are expertly designed to seamlessly integrate the endeavors of many students and faculty.
Consider the undergraduate year-abroad experience, traditionally undertaken during a student's junior year. What if students could have a place to chronicle their experiences in these different cultures and countries? A homepage for all active blogs by students abroad could be created, featuring the most recent entries and breakdowns by class, year, program, or country of study. Students could use the blogs to reflect upon their experiences, to directly address family and friends back home, or as part of an assignment. Media files in their blogs, such as images, audio or video culled from their experiences, could also be included.
Although those participating in a study abroad program become immersed in a range of different cultures, a blog site could create a sense of community among those away from home. Students might find reassurance and enjoyment in communicating with and reading chronicles of others going through the same type of experience. The nature of Web publishing means that the site would always be up-to-date, and that students would be unhindered by political borders when publishing their thoughts.
In other arenas, blogs could be used to continue particularly lively class discussions cut short by an in-class schedule. Students could further their arguments with links to other information and evidence to support their positions. The online discussion could also allow more timid members of the class or those more comfortable expressing themselves in writing another venue for joining in the discussion.
Researchers working across time zones and at different universities can use blogs to meet, update, brainstorm, and archive ideas and documents. Using a blog package's search engine, they can retrieve past postings, which might yield new analytic connections or relevance.
In the pedagogical realm, the uses of blogs are only limited by the imagination. For instance, campus writing centers could partner with academic departments and IT organizations to encourage and develop the writing skills of undergraduates. The site would likely be of interest to the greater campus community, as well, as blogs frequently produce entertaining or interesting writing from those who traditionally have not had such broad outlets for written expression.
In the classroom, a professor might document his or her personal research and allow students to follow their progress via the project's blog. Students could take an active role in following research developments, offering questions, or sparking new ideas both in the classroom and on the site. Such interaction could bridge the traditional divide between classroom instruction and research interests of faculty. Seeing firsthand how the instructor uses classroom concepts in the research could make the course material more relevant and actively engage students in the research interests of their professors.
Avoid Bogging Down in Blogs
Blogs are by their nature fairly easy to set up, with minimal risk of getting hung up in installation or application integration.
The low overhead, low-tech nature of blogs means that most every campus can put a blog site into production quickly and easily. All that is needed to get started is commonplace technology. That might be an Apache-based Web server, standard software packages (e.g. Perl) installed, and support people with rudimentary HTML knowledge. Depending on the needs of the users, the choice of blogging package, and the time and personnel that can be devoted to set-up, blog-based sites can be feature-rich, professional in appearance and easy to maintain. The best packages feature a complete solution that can be installed locally with a range of customizable options, such as calendaring systems, notifications, support for multiple authors, and syndication of content via the RSS (Really Simple Syndication) XML-based protocol.
The true overhead comes in the set-up. Once up and running, the blog site is quite self-sufficient, freeing both support staff and authors from the type of technical work that so often interferes with content development.
When considering a blog-based site as a replacement for an existing site or system, IT staff may want to introduce blogging alongside a current system to allow users to acclimate to the system. The easy integration of these systems should make the process painless, and chances are that the simplicity, accessibility and immediacy of the blogging tool will make it popular very quickly.
Toward a Blog-Powered Future
The rise of blogging suggests new ways to think about collaboration and communication in the university setting. The business and high-tech sectors have already begun to take note, with many companies already looking at how blogging might foster innovation within their organizations.
The company behind Google, for example, the premier Web search engine, recently purchased one of the most ubiquitous blog code developers, Pyra Labs, and its product, Blogger. With the purchase, Google underscored its commitment to the new medium and the company's intention to develop new search methods around blogs, their distinct link structure, and rapidly changing content.
Although relatively new, blogging is already evolving, expanding and re-inventing itself. One new approach is the knowledge log, or k-log. It is based on the idea that the modus operandi of blogs—the spontaneous transmission of ideas, analysis, knowledge—could be a valuable mechanism for preserving information for the research community. K-logs could serve as a repository to collect, organize and, later, search information that might otherwise not have been captured at all. From this, new relationships, insights, and discoveries could be drawn from the preserved data.
Other new systems, such as Wiki and projects based on it, propose allowing users to build a Web site—content and more—on the fly. In this model, an entire Web site is built with an open or blog approach, with individual users free to create and edit Web page content using any Web browser.
As blogging and blog-like site development and content management takes off, it will remain to be seen what its impact will be on institutional systems already in place. With thoughtful planning, careful monitoring, and the support of strong policies and guidelines, such systems can avoid being disruptive or threatening to publication and collaborative technologies already in place. Demand and interest in them will guide their usage, but those charged with the creation and maintenance of such systems must continue to be mindful of the power of the medium, the nature of the content, and the audience that may ultimately access it.

Bitácoras
La primera vez que conocí el término weblog se remonta al 28 de diciembre de 2002... Reconozco que bastante tarde para lo enterado que estaba el mundo de esta nueva forma de comunicarnos, pero en fin, ese día me llegó a mi buzón de correos una historia muy graciosa sobre "la navidad en Venezuela" y pregunté a quien me lo había enviado, la fuente. Esto fue lo que recibí:
"la encontré en una de esas páginas que llaman weblogs, son algo así como diarios personales y llegué a ella por pura serendipitividad."
Lo asimilé como eso: una sencilla información... Al pasar el tiempo, fui consultando más y más diarios personales, preguntándome que ganaría la gente escribiendo.
No existe mayor censura que la autoimpuesta, una bitácora tan solo se resume en una experiencia donde puedes contribuir a que otros internautas aprendan sobre algo que te apasiona, conocer distintos puntos de vista, técnicas que desconocías; en otras palabras, estar en contacto con gente que te visita desde lugares muy lejanos.
¿serán para siempre? Están de moda, y eso no se discute. Google acaba de adquirir el mayor proveedor de bitácoras en la red. Dentro de algunos meses, todos los grandes portales apostarán por este servicio, tal y como ha ocurrido con cuentas de correo, álbumes de fotos o directorios telefónicos.
Y a ti: ¿qué te motivó a abrir tu bitácora? (si la tienes claro está) Me mantuve escéptica a la idea de tener una por cuestiones de tiempo (y no es precisamente que ahora tenga demasiado). También porque necesitaba buscar un tema. Cuando las acciones las hacemos porque están de moda, no tardaremos en abandonarlas...
No creo ser parte del fenómeno de los weblogs, a titulo personal, considero que postear es una forma de exhibicionismo o por el contrario, simples deseos de compartir lo que sabes. Aunque es totalmente opuesto lo que acabo de describir, yo me apunto por creer que estoy aquí, porque quizás haya un estudiante perdido en la web preguntando como diablos se divide una red, o algo similar (deduzco que son intenciones proteccionistas, para que nadie se enfrente a la frustración que supone no encontrar lo que busca)... Me motiva pensar que soy útil, pero no para contar mis dolencias, o mis sentimientos, para eso, será mejor que dejemos el ordenador a un lado. (.../...)

Internet giants catch on to blogs: Major portals provide services for online journals
Blogs, online diaries kept by people who want to share their thoughts, peeves and lives with others, are an underground phenomenon. Right?
It's a niche world of small Web sites that most people outside the blogging community have no idea exists. Right?
Wrong. Blogging is becoming mainstream.
America Online, the Internet behemoth, began offering blogging to its users in August. At the same time, Yahoo started experimenting with blogs on its Korean Web site and is believed to be considering expanding the service elsewhere in its vast network.
Google and Lycos began offering blogging earlier this year.
"It definitely seems like blogging is losing its underground image," said Matthew Haughey, co- author of the book "We Blog: Publishing Online with Weblogs" and co-founder of Blogroots, a Web site that chronicles blogging news.
"I'm hopeful that it's a good thing that every Tom, Dick and Harry has a blog. "
Analysts say that the big Web portals are trying to capitalize on the growing popularity of blogs, journals that are frequently updated with everything from personal musings to art, poems and photography. Analysts agree that hundreds of thousands if not millions of people have created such Web pages within the past few years.
Reasons to keep blogs vary, but most bloggers say they are simply a way to express themselves, connect with others and work with software.
"I use it as a sociological experiment to see what kinds of things I post will cause people to comment," said Peter Steinauer, a software engineer from San Francisco who keeps the blog, www.swimfinssf.com.
Steinauer's blog touches on everything from trying to get a deck built for his home (none of the contractors he left messages with returned calls) to gay politics (he supports same-sex marriage) to details about his latest dinner (whiskey flank steak, green beans and au gratin potatoes). He said that up to 100 people visit his Web site every day.
The blogging community is still relatively small. Only 2 percent of online households visit a blog site once a week or more, according to a survey released last month by Forrester Research, a market research firm.
In fact, a big portion of the respondents, 79 percent, had never even heard of blogging before the survey.
For the big Web portals, offering blogging software and pages is a way to attract and keep users. The direct financial benefits, however, are limited, analysts say.
"It's a lot of hullabaloo over not a lot of value," said Chris Charron, an analyst for Forrester Research, a market research firm. "That's not to say that blogs don't add value to the people who use them."
The portals have little choice but to offer blogs for free. Charging is difficult because free blogging software is so widely available elsewhere on the Internet.
Advertising is one way to make money. In fact, it appears on blogs created using the software of certain companies, but big advertisers aren't generally interested in blogs, Charron said.
"The quality of these blogs is incredibly variable," Charron said. "It's just not likely to generate a lot of value for an advertiser."
Rick Robinson, vice president for community products at America Online, said his new company's blogging feature, AOL Journals, has about 30,000 registered users so far. It filled a gap in what the Web service offers for personal publishing, he said.
There was no easy way for users to create a Web site on AOL that they could update regularly, Robinson said. At the same time, his company was monitoring the growing popularity of blogging.
What AOL created is a service that it bills as having many uses. Members can create a journal, blog, online column or travelogue, then supplement them with photos and picture albums alongside the text.
"We're trying to be a little more leading edge," Robinson said.
Robinson said AOL realized that its leap into blogging might anger the blogging community, known as an independently minded group. To avoid conflicts, his firm met with many small blog developers and users during the past year.
"We wanted to make sure they knew we were coming into the community but not taking it over," Robinson said.
Google, the popular Internet search engine in Mountain View, got into blogging by buying Pyra Labs, owner of Blogger.com. The value of the acquisition, made in February, was not disclosed.
Google has modestly integrated Blogger.com into its operations. For example, users can place a link to a blog of their choice through the Google tool bar. Google also places ads on blogs created through Blogger.com.
"I think that blogging will be much, much bigger than it is," said Evan Williams, a program manager for Pyra Labs and a co-founder of Blogger.com. "Maybe not everyone in the world will blog, but I think it will become a natural part of the Internet."
Haughey, the author, said that there are two sides to the growth in blogging. It has always been a venue for discussion where bloggers post and then solicit comment from readers.
"There's always a chance that you have wild new perspectives," Haughey said.
He added, "Some of the old bloggers have complained that as the numbers go up, it's hard to find useful blogs."
Asked whether bloggers will have an aversion to using the big portals, Haughey said not necessarily. He said it depends on how good services are, but he added that old-school bloggers value registering their own, catchy Internet domains.
"I think that most old bloggers want myblog.com, not aol.blogs/username."

A bloguemania está a difundir-se rapidamente. É, por enquanto, um exercício particular de quem gosta de ter opiniões abundantes e imediatas e revela uma acentuada necessidade de comunicar. A maior parte dos blogues que conheço aparenta-se ao género diarístico da antiga literatura. Um parente dissemelhante e de outra geração. Em todo o caso é um descendente_ À primeira vista é um descendente, em língua portuguesa, de um Miguel Torga menos esculpido em granito lexical, de um Vergílio Ferreira mais mundano na sua conta-corrente, de um Fernando Aires angustiado de metafísica, de um Cristóvão de Aguiar bloguista avant la lettre com a sua relação de bordo existencial. Até me lembrei de Teixeira de Pascoaes e de Raul Brandão, mas os blogues dos nossos cibernautas pouco tratam de sentimentos. Estão mais virados para a descoberta da luta política por conta própria. Porque será? É claro que os blogues não são mais nem menos do que os sites precocemente envelhecidos pela necessidade de criar modas internéticas. Ainda há 50 anos se viravam os fatos do avesso, dando-lhes um retomado colorido, caso o tecido valesse a pena. O site é mais institucional, o blogue é mais individual _ ambos unidos por uma orgia de endereços electrónicos_ Deste modo, e antes que seja tarde, aproveito esta minha curiosidade de férias, para apresentar um modelo de blogue-notas:
Quinta-feira, dia 28: João Cravinho propõe António Guterres como cabeça-de-lista para as europeias. Não é a primeira vez que o faz, mas em Agosto o caso foi mais falado do que nos blogues que reservam uma entrada para Comentários(o). Acho uma boa ideia, embora não faltem excelentes candidatos a cabeças-de- lista para o Parlamento Europeu em quase todos os partidos do sistema, e até fora dele. Depois dos jogadores de futebol deve ser mesmo a melhor especialidade portuguesa. Por isso não me preocupo muito com o assunto. Alguém há-de aparecer. Prevejo um bom resultado do PS e a eleição de pelo menos um deputado do Bloco de Esquerda. Mesmo que o PSD perca essas eleições, com certeza que Durão Barroso não se demitirá. Leio uns documentos da Casa Pia n'O Independente. Mas se todos os portugueses fossem avaliados, na indevida altura, por pedo-psiquiatras, quem garantiria o estado da nação no futuro?! E quantos blogues não seriam precisos para revelar as pulsões, as tendências, e até os actos de tanta gente feliz com lágrimas? Freud elaborou uma teoria geral. Sábado, dia 30: José Sócrates, no Expresso, afirma que António Guterres é o melhor candidato às eleições presidenciais. Pasmo com este afã de candidatar o presidente da Internacional Socialista a todos os cargos imagináveis. Tanto mais que agora ele vai em missão social da ONU junto de Lula da Silva, conforme também me ensina o mesmo semanário. Prevejo que António Guterres aproveitará a primeira ocasião para repetir estar retirado da política doméstica activa. Ainda é muito cedo para «o natural», como notou o E. P. C.
